Bluesky Makes Marketing Your Ethical Businesses Easier

Bluesky is an incredible blue ocean opportunity for ethical businesses to STAND OUT and become the most talked about brand in your niche.

I recently started using Bluesky instead of Meta and it’s helping me save time and fall in love with marketing again. And, as an ethical business owner who cares about the impact of the tools I use, I’m much happier supporting a for-benefit corporation.

If you haven’t heard of this phrase “blue ocean” before, let me explain that first.

It’s from a book called “Blue Ocean Strategy” that describes saturated market spaces as “red oceans” because they’re cut-throat and bloody from so many brands competing for the same audience.

Whereas “blue oceans” are deeper, less crowded areas with ample resources and little-to-no competition.

In other words, “blue oceans” are ideal because your business isn’t drowned out by brands with bigger budgets and louder marketing teams. But blue oceans aren’t easy to find. They usually have to be created with a behemoth amount of marketing effort.

Right now, Bluesky is very much a blue ocean that ethical brands can jump into without having to create it themselves. And it’s a breath of fresh air for small business owners who are tired of feeling like the algorithm is rigged against them.

Bluesky As An Ethical Alternative To Facebook, Instagram, Threads, And X

My initial plan for opening a Bluesky account was to test the waters and see how long it would take to make sales, drive traffic to my site, and build connections.

Not just for myself, but also for my circle of clients & friends who shared their fears that ditching Meta would mean going out of business.

I find it terrifying to let a company like Meta have that much control over your sales, but it happens. Especially for new business owners who haven’t expanded into SEO yet or established businesses who get amazing ROAS.

I’m divesting from all of Meta’s apps because I don’t want to be the reason anyone logs into one. And I don’t want Zuck collecting ad revenue from my scrolling.

Especially now that they’ve discontinued DEI, changed policies to allow harm towards the LGBTQIA 2s+ community, cut funding to the schools they launched for communities of color, on top of their existing data abuses and other harmful acts towards humanity.

Fern CX exists to make the world a better place and we can’t do that with tools that support fascism and oligarchs or prioritizes profits over people & the planet.

Short answer: it is.

But it’s so much more than just “ready.”

It’s a complete game changer and a blue ocean opportunity the likes of which we haven’t seen in the online industry since 2010.

I joined Bluesky 3 months ago, but I didn’t actively use it until 1 month ago.

In the past month, here’s what I’ve tracked:

  • I’m spending half as much time on social media.
  • The traffic to my site from Bluesky is equal to my current traffic from Pinterest or Instagram (and growing!)
  • My sales from Bluesky have been equal to my sales from Threads (which has been my main source of new leads and sales for the past year)
  • I got a paid speaking gig without trying (I didn’t pitch or ask for it, I wasn’t even looking for one!)
  • My email list started growing again (it’s been stagnant for almost a year despite talking about it on Threads)

In just one month, I’ve gotten new customers, a paid speaking gig, and grown my email list as a direct result of my activities on Bluesky. In less time than I used to spend on Threads.

I feel 100% confident and comfortable ditching Meta and doubling down on Bluesky from this point forward and I want to help as many ethical business owners do the same!

And it’s not just me.

“The Boston Globe reported in November 2024 that it was seeing 3x more traffic from Bluesky, compared with Threads, and 4.5x higher conversions to paid subscriptions.

Also in November, Guardian Australia editor Dave Earley shared that Bluesky traffic to The Guardian’s website was already 2x that of Threads, and Bluesky traffic to its posts was higher than X’s referral traffic in 2024.” [source]

Unlike other social media apps, Bluesky doesn’t hold you or your followers hostage in hopes that you’ll get sucked into the quicksand of the infinite scroll and never click away to another site.

And sure, I’ve only been on the app for a few months now and I’m certainly no expert. But let me show you exactly what Bluesky is doing that’s making ethical business owners break up with Meta for good.

The People On Bluesky *Want* Ethical Alternatives (Like Your Biz)

I don’t know the real reason 35 million people have opened an account on Bluesky. But you don’t jump onto a brand new app that’s still working things out unless you’re serious about supporting an ethical alternative.

People who spend time on a decentralized social media app owned by a for-benefit company are the same people who support ethical businesses that align with their values.

Bluesky has 35 million potential customers who shop ethically, support small businesses, and have friends, family, and/or coworkers that might also be your best-fit clients.

Some of Bluesky’s users are also ethical business owners who jumped ship right away, moved to Bluesky, and haven’t opened a Meta app since.

So, whether your brand is B2B or B2C, you’re likely to find an active and engaged community of potential customers looking for ethical alternatives like the ones you sell!

Bluesky Is A Rare Opportunity For Small Businesses That Struggle To Stand Out

Growing your business on Bluesky now, while the market is still relatively unsaturated, is like going back in time to when Facebook first launched ads or Instagram first appeared.

Imagine jumping on that opportunity in 2010 with all the experience and expertise you have today.

I don’t know a single business owner that wouldn’t give up chocolate for a year to get 10 cent webinar leads again or be one of the first thought leaders to leverage Instagram.

This is the competitive advantage you’ve been secretly longing for and now is the best time to get started!

You can be the first brand in your niche to publish a binge-worthy library of engaging videos, expert tips, or inspiring images that users pounce on because there’s nothing else like it on Bluesky!

Become the most re-posted and talked about brand on Bluesky before it’s flooded with the next wave of Threads users look for an escape from the ads flooding their feed.

And you don’t even need new content!

Start by posting the stuff you’re most proud of from your vast history on the other apps. Even if it flopped over there, it might go mini-viral without an algorithm that punishes you for posting less than 4x/day.

Right now, because of how the features work, your content is more likely to show up in the Explore page on Bluesky. And because there are so few brands like yours right now, your audience will flock to you because they’re eager to find more people like you over there.

I mean, just look at the happy dance SoVerve does when they find the right people on Bluesky:

It’s the first Friday of the month which means #FollowFriday is back, woot! 😎 I'm sharing folks who inspired me and made my corner of the internet better with their expertise, & 🙌🏼 good vibes. @ferncxandcrm.com @sarahmoon.bsky.social @heyitskirstin.bsky.social Hit the follow button + engage!

Like SoVerve, I LOVE seeing new brands show up in my feed and I excitedly engage with their stuff to support them!

I’ve connected with so many new people on Bluesky and quite a few of them have become biz besties that I engage with daily.

It’s Not Just Bluesky, You’re Reaching The Whole AT Protocol Network

Ok, that’s technical jargon for the Bluesky feature that’s the BIGGEST gamechanger for your business.

Bluesky is just one of many apps in the same ecosystem that can all see each other and engage with one another in what’s called the “ATmosphere.”

For example, there’s a TikTok/Reels style app on the same network called Skylight Social. And a photo sharing site like Instagram called Pinksky.

Are you picking up what I’m putting down here?

No more crossposting!

When you post on one app, it shows up on all the apps!

All the likes, comments, and follows also show up on all the apps.

So if you get a new follower from Pinksky, they show up as a follower on Bluesky and vice versa.

Even if you don’t have an account on Pinksky, Skylight, or any of the other apps. It’s all built-in, automatic.

And if you decide to download one of those apps and use it, you just log in with your Bluesky login. Your account already exists and is ready for you over there.

Growing your business on Bluesky saves you loads of time and helps you reach a ton more people because it shares your content and engagement for you.

Bluesky is kind of your catch-all app where you can post any kind of content ~ text, images, videos, etc. Even carousels kind of translate to Bluesky. Here’s an example of how carousels look now, but it might get an upgrade any day now:

Buyer experience as a form of revolution that can impact global systemic change? YES PLEASE!! 10 slides that start the conversation for #EthicalBusiness owners, #ActivistBusiness owners, and other #Changemakers Slides 3-10 continued below 👇

That’s an embedded post ~ another great feature that’s already built-in to Bluesky.

You can click on the post to pop over and see the other 8 slides if you like. When you’re on Bluesky and you click on the photo, it opens the photo full-sized so you can read it and swipe to the next photo to keep reading.

And YES, that’s Bluesky in dark mode, but there’s light mode too.

(And don’t forget, your video captions have clickable links!! So you can send people directly to your blog post, YouTube video, podcast episode, or sales page to get the rest of the details!)

This is all possible because Bluesky is built on a decentralized network called the AT protocol (prounced like @ protocol and sometimes referred to as the ATmosphere.)

The ATmosphere is similar to the “fediverse” where users of Mastodon, Threads, PeerTube, and Flipboard can all see each other on another network called the ActivityPub protocol.

The AT protocol is owned by and developed by the same for-benefit corporation that owns Bluesky. Whereas the fediverse apps are owned by whoever owns that app. For example, Zuck owns Threads which is one app on the fediverse’s ActivityPub protocol.

How To Jump On Your Bluesky Opportunity (Before It Gets Crowded)

By now, you might be thinking, “Say no more! I’m clicking over to Bluesky right now!!”

Which would be awesome because I’m determined to help as many ethical business owners divest from Meta & Musk and start using this competitive advantage!

I’m going to keep listing all the ways Bluesky is better for your business, but if you’re already feeling the itch to open the app and start creating your profile, peep this before you go:

Because Bluesky is still so new, you might feel tempted to try it for a minute and then give up and go back to Meta before it gets to the level where you feel secure in your business goals.

To help you avoid that, we put together a FREE community of do-good business owners to help you leverage your blue ocean opportunity quickly (before the mass exodus from Threads happens.)

Learn more here: Fern’s Grassroots Marketing Community

It’s by application only, to ensure each member is doing business ethically and will respect the rights and safety of everyone in the community.

If you create your Bluesky account after applying, you might get your Welcome email by the time you’ve filled out your bio!

Ok, we still have a few more reasons why Bluesky is the better option for you as a human and as a business owner. So keep reading if you want all the juicy details.

F* The Algorithm, Let Me Choose

Ever since Instagram introduced reels, I’ve wanted a way to create separate feeds for my separate interests.

Sure, I saved all the fitness reels I thought I might try later into my “Fitness Collection.” But what I really wanted was a feed of all my fave fitness accounts so I could scroll through the latest vids when I was in the mood to work out.

But I guess Instagram can’t send me into the quicksand of endless scrolling if I’m able to curate my feed like that!

Oh the horror, that I might actually find what I’m looking for right away, do the exercises, and just leave without wasting another hour scrolling and forgetting why I even opened the app!

I suppose you could do that on Bluesky too, if you want.

Or, you can create customized “Lists” and “Feeds” where you add the accounts you want to include on that list and from there you can scroll your list like it’s a separate feed curated by you.

For example, check out our curated feed of Ethical Businesses on Bluesky.

Oh, the empowerment! The ability to choose what I want to see!

It’s yet another example of how Bluesky isn’t out to hold you hostage, it’s simply there to help you connect and build communities.

Even at this early stage, Bluesky offers a range of features to help you see what you want to see and hide the rest. Swipe through a few pix to see more:

  • Bluesky settings page for the moderation options as displayed on a mobile device. The image also includes the words, "Control your scroll."
  • The Bluesky settings page for choosing what feeds you want to see, as displayed on a mobile device. The image includes the words, "Your timeline, your choice."
  • Image shows 2 mobile devices, each with Bluesky open. One shows the DM screen and the other shows a post in a feed.

Nope, this isn’t a sponsored post or anything, Bluesky just makes these images available for anyone who wants to use them…

Can Bluesky Replace All Your Meta Leads & Sales?

For some small businesses with smaller followings, absolutely 100% YES.

For some businesses with big audiences, YES, with a bit of effort to help your followers move with you (or patience while you wait for 86,400 new users to join every day. Yep, that’s a real stat!)

As a marketer with 20 years of experience, who has seen platforms come and go over the years, I think every business should reduce its dependency on ads and social media platforms for lead generation and diversify where sales come from. (Because being dependent on any one source is risky.)

But I also value social media for community building, customer experience, retention, raving fans, UGC, all of which naturally results in new leads.

Whatever you’re currently using Meta for (or X, TikTok, etc.), Bluesky is the perfect alternative.

And who knows ~ maybe someday we’ll be able to buy ads from Bluesky and the ad revenue will be reinvested into their for-benefit corporation to help humanity and build better communities.

And I sleep so good at night, knowing Meta won’t be making any money off my need to stay in business.

It won’t be forcing me to use AI in my groups. It won’t make a dime off my scrolling or make me pull my hair out over rising ad costs and declining ROAS. And I’m no longer a participant in the billionaire sharecropper industry.

I doubt Zuck will struggle to afford the mortgage payments on his new house in DC, where he can have lunch with the evil orange clown daily. It certainly didn’t stop him from adding another yacht to his $330 MILLION fleet this month.

But at least I won’t be helping him wine and dine nazis while he closes the inner city schools he created in California (because they’re too DEI.)

If you want to be part of this resistance and a movement to change the world, I’d love to get to know you and your business over at Bluesky!
